It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth “Kenny” Huckstep Jr., lovingly known as Kenny to his family and “Huck” to his friends. Kenny, age 60 of St. Petersburg, FL was called home to his eternal rest on March 10th, 2025
Kenny was born on November 5th , 1964, in Freeport, IL. He was the son of Kenneth Gene Huckstep, Sr. and Mary “Peggy” (Ward) Huckstep of Charleston IL. He was raised in the country of Charleston, IL, where he and his 5 siblings and parents spent many years fixing up a 1870’s historical country home while enjoying the country life, exploring the woods of Fox Ridge State Park and the surrounding area. Kenny’s adventurist lifestyle proved to be an unending passion for exploring this great country and all that it has to offer.
Kenny graduated from Charleston High School in 1983. While there he notably excelled in football, earning all-state and all-conference honors as a defensive tight end and offensive guard for the Charleston Trojans. His determination on the field highlighted his unyielding perseverance, a trait that marked his life.
After graduating high school, Kenny joined the US Navy as a Fire Control Technician (FC) and climbed the ranks to Petty Officer 2nd Class. He was a Plank Owner assigned to the USS Mobil Bay Aegis Class Cruiser and was honorably discharged in 1988. His service speaks volumes of his dedication and patriotism to his nation.
In 1987 Kenny fathered a son, Kenneth Gene Huckstep III. He enjoyed many happy moments with his son and shared his passion of exploring the outdoors.
Kenny also had a passion for raising and assisting in the training of AKC K-9 German Shepherds for Police, Fire & Rescue, FBI and First Responders across the nation. He was very honored that 2 of his canines served in the recovery efforts at the Twin Towers site in New York City after 911.
Kenny resided in the Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg Florida area, loving the ocean and all the wildlife that surrounded him. He managed a pool and patio store where he designed and sold pools, spas and hot-tubs. While living in Florida, Kenny spent a great deal of time exploring and mapping the many Spring Heads throughout Florida. He captured stunning photographs of these beautiful Springs and put together a collection that would reflect the beauty of these beautiful hidden gems. Ken was also an avid collector of antiques and historical items. It was in the discovery of these hidden treasures and artifacts that he found a hobby in attending and participating in local flea markets and auctions.
Kenny met Lynn Rogers during this time, and they spent many happy years enjoying the Florida beaches, Springs and forming many fond relationships with others who also enjoyed the hunt for the next “Great Find or Treasure”. Ken also had a passion to help those in need. It was not unusual for him during a hurricane or post hurricane to drive around and help people in his community.
Survivors include his sisters, Cherie White (Joe) and Vickie Biggs. Brothers, Brian Huckstep (Paula), and Scott Huckstep (Jeni). Along with nieces Jennette, Hannah and Maria. Nephews, Anthony, Enrique, Aric, Andrew, Cody and Alexander. He was preceded in death by his son
Kenneth Gene Huckstep III, father Kenneth Gene Huckstep Sr., mother Mary (Peggy) Ward Huckstep and sister Maria Tiongson (Ric).
A Celebration of Life will be held at Fox Ridge State Park, 18175 State Park Rd. Charleston IL at the “Brick Pavilion” on Saturday April 19th 2025, from 12:00pm to 4pm. A location that was very dear to his heart.

My deepest condolences to Kenny’s family and friends. I remember him from high school as kind, outgoing, and an all-around nice guy. May memories sustain you as you grieve and carry you to a place of comfort and peace
So sad to hear this. Our families were friends early on getting together often and through sports in high school. May there be peace in this process for all.
This news saddens me so. Kenny was just the nicest guy and treated all so nicely. Gone way to soon. Prayers for his family and friends that they will find peace and comfort in all the wonderful memories.
Kenny, you are one of the few that made my senior year (only year) at CHS memorable. My heart smiles knowing you lived such an amazing life. You will be missed by so many. Fly Free!
Deepest condolences to family and friends. He was such a nice guy in school.
My sincerest sympathy to Kenny’s family. Kenny was a great person, a great football player, and an all round nice guy. RIP MY FRIEND.
It is with a deep sadness that I offer my condolences. As I write these words I can’t help remembering Kenny’s big smile. I played football along side of him as a Charleston Trojan; he was a 110% take-no-plays-off kind of guy.
After high school I joined the Air Force and Kenny, the Navy. We lost touch with each other. I sure would have loved to join him on one of those searchs for the next great “hidden gem or treasure”.
Rest In Peace My Friend.
My condolences to the Huckstep family. I have many fond memories of Kenny from high school. RIP Kenny.
My deepest sympathy to the Huckstep family. Kenny was a really good guy and while I haven’t seen him in many years, I have fond memories of high school with him
